This engine was built as part of a batch by the Hunslet Engine Company, Leeds to a Midland design by Fowler. 47298 emerged from the works in November 1924, numbered 1463. For the first few years the engine was number 7138, until renumbered 7298 in March 1935 and was shedded at Camden. The class was mostly seen across the LMS system in marshalling yards and carriage sidings, occasionally operating branch trains.
In February 1928, the engine moved to Northampton and spent the next 13 years there until moving to Willesden briefly in February 1941 and then Bletchley, before ending its working life at Sutton Oak, St Helens from August 1954 until withdrawal. 47298 then moved to Barry in 1966, being preserved in 1974 and moving to Steamport, Southport for restoration with a return to steam in 1979.
7298 took part at the 'Rocket 150' event at Rainhill in 1980 before moving to Llangollen in 1983. Here it has operated train along this branchline in both its BR and LMS guises, as well as the occasional change into the blue livery to perform as a famous engine. More recently the engine has remained in its blue guise, performing at Thomas events at the Llangollen and also travelling around the country to star in events at other preserved railways.
