Emerging from Newton-le-Willows as LMS no.16576, it was sent to Bromley-by-Bow in London, working suburban and freight over the former North London Line. Renumbered to 7493 before World War 2, it was renumbered again by British Railways in April 1948, appearing as 47493.Transferred to Liverpool in 1954, it worked in the North West until withdrawal from service in December 1966. Sent to Woodham Bros scrap yard in Barry in April 1967, 47493 was preserved in June 1972. Moved to the East Somerset Railway, Cranmore in 1973, it was overhauled and returned to steam in January 1976. It ran until 1990 where it was given a general overhaul. Withdrawn for further repairs, it was moved to Tunbridge Wells West in March 2000 for a major overhaul to be conducted on the boiler and various motion parts. The locomotive returned to service in March 2004.
The Jinty made a number of visits to other railways in 2005, firstly to the Mid Hants Railway for their steam gala in March 2005, and secondly the Somerset and Dorset Heritage Trust at Midsomer Norton in July. In late 2005, the engine was withdrawn for a major axlebox overhaul to cure some niggling issues that had come to light during its two years of service. The overhaul was completed in the late June 2006 and the engine returned to service on 16th July. Later that year, 47493 visited the Swanage Railway for the Steam Gala, where it ran for one weekend.
In May 2007, the engine was withdrawn for a boiler re-tube which was completed and saw the locomotive return to service in August 2007. This was followed by the renewal of its firebox crown stays in the first half of 2008.
