Southerham
Works No. 2591
Drewry Car Company - Built 1959,
Drewry Car Company, England
Weight - 22.75 tons
Engine Specification - Gardener 6L3, 6 cylinder diesel engine, with electric
start.
Wheel Arrangement - 4WD.
Built in 1959, the locomotive is believed to have spent it's entire life at
Southerham Cement Works, Lewes, shunting wagons between the works and the
trans-shipment sidings. It was the first item of rolling stock purchased by the
society in 1987, and until the early 1990s, it was stored at the Lavender Line,
Isfield. It was used for the very first works trains on the railway. Fitted with
air brakes in 1997, it has been used for a variety of jobs such as stand-by for
passenger trains, empty stock movements and engineers trains. With the arrival
of the larger diesel shunters, recent work has centred around lighter duties
such as shunting and small works trains, for which it is most suited.
In early 2006, work began on the engine to re-wire it and return the engine to service following fire damage. The locomotive returned to service in time for the annual diesel gala but then returned to the shed for completion of works, prior to returning to service.
