A sister locomotive to 'Hotspur', 'Spartan' was imported to Britain in April 1997, having worked at the Skawina metalworks, Poland. Little used since a major overhaul in 1992, the engine was the first to be completely rebuilt on-site at Tunbridge Wells West. The locomotive has undergone a considerable change from its original Polish form. It has been anglicised with the construction of brand new tanks, cab and an 'Ivatt' style bunker. Brand new fittings have been added which include new injectors. It re-entered service on the railway in July 2000.
Retubed and returned to traffic in 2005, the engine was subsequently withdrawn from traffic again requiring further boiler work which has now been completed. The engine was reassembled between 2008 and 2010, with it making a return to service in time to appear at the railway's annual steam gala in April 2010. It is due to be withdrawn from traffic once again to allow a full repaint to take place which was completed in late October and the locomotive entered full service in time for 2010 Christmas period.
