Things to do along the Spa Valley

The Spa Valley Railway is a fun day out in itself, but for added variety there are things to do at or from each of our stations.

See Along The Line for a pen-portrait of your journey.

Join the train at Eridge and break your journey at Groombridge for:

• A classic old-world village with an ancient pub and green,

• Groombridge Place Gardens and Enchanted Forest (joint tickets available),

• Village cricket and free children's playground next to the station.

• Country walks to High Rocks, Tunbridge Wells, or back to Eridge.

Alight at High Rocks for:

• Ancient sandstone outcrops and country walks,

• Country pub with large garden - ideal to sit and watch the trains go by!

Stay on to Tunbridge Wells for:

• The historic Spa town,

• The Pantiles, High Street and Chalybeate Spring,

• Extensive commons.

At Tunbridge Wells West, a miniature railway runs parallel to the engine shed, offering rides to our younger visitors. It runs most Saturdays.

Special Events 2012

In addition to all of the things above, the Railway hosts a range of special events throughout the year, which include A Day Out with Thomas and our very popular Santa Specials in December. 

With events for families, young children and grown-ups alike, there's sure to be something to suit you!

• Members/Volunteers Day - 31st March
  Come and look behind the scenes and see how you could help run your local railway. Free travel for those joining on the day.

• Easter Specials 8th & 9th April
  On Sunday and Monday there's an Easter bunny hunt, plus Easter eggs for visiting children.

• Spring Steam Gala - 14th & 15th April
  Our annual steam-based gala. All available locomotives in steam and perhaps a visitor

• Spring and Autumn Diesel Days - 21st April & 20th October
  Our fleet of heritage diesels take over for these events in the spring and autumn (no steam on these days).

• A Day Out with Thomas - 12th, 13th, 19th & 20th May 
  The little blue tank engine makes his first visit of the year to Tunbridge Wells to meet all his friends.

• Meet Peppa Pig and George - 16th June
  A chance to meet the characters from the animated children's series.

• Steaming through the 40's - 22nd - 24th June
  One of the major events in the railway's calendar. Experience the 1940s on the railway, Army vehicles and personnel, 1940s cooking and a variety of attractions at all the stations along the line.

• Gilbert and Sullivan Day - 30th June
  A new event for 2012. Check back in the spring for more details.

• "1317"  DEMU anniversary day - 7th July
  Coinciding with the 27th anniversary of the closure of the Tunbridge Wells to Eridge line, the very special re-launch of our iconic and unique Sussex Thumper unit. Check back in the spring for more details.

• Meet Bob the Builder - 21st July
  A chance to meet everyone's favourite handyman.

• Summer Diesel Gala - 3rd - 6th August
  Our annual heritage diesel 3 day extravaganza, with special intensive service (No steam on these days)

• Teddy Bears Day Out - 18th & 19th August
  Take teddy out for the day! All accompanied children who bring a teddy travel for £1 (and teddy goes free!)

• Meet Fireman Sam - 8th September
  A chance to meet everyone's favourite firefighter.

• Swinging '60s - 15th & 16th September
  Re-live your mis-spent youth at this new event.

• A Day Out with Thomas - 6th, 7th, 13th & 14th October 
  The little blue tank engine makes a return visit to Tunbridge Wells to meet all his friends.

• Hallowe'en Murder Mystery Evening - 2nd November 
  Another debut event for 2012. Join us for a murderous night aboard the steam train!

Details and a booking form for "A Day Out With Thomas" and "Santa Special" events will be available from Tunbridge Wells West station, and from this website at least 3 months prior to the event. Advanced booking is strongly advised for these popular events to avoid disappointment.

Our popular Fish and Chip Suppers will operate on a number of dates in 2012. Please check our Fish and Chip Special page for further details and dates.
