Post Lockdown Fish & Chip Lunches!

POST LOCKDOWN – British tradition and heritage trains!
At the Spa Valley Railway we have been operating Fish and Chip Lunch trains for many years and they now have an extremely popular reputation amongst the local population and also from afar, we attract a lot of coach parties to our Fish and Chip lunches and can accommodate them privately on other operating days too. 

Following a period of closure during COVID-19 we are once again operating our popular Fish & Chip Lunch trains, under different conditions to our previous trains to ensure we can maintain Social Distancing and be COVID secure. 

What’s on offer?
Join the train from 12:00 at Tunbridge Wells West and at 12:30 the train will set off for Groombridge. Whilst on your journey you will enjoy a freshly prepared Fish and Chip lunch for the return trip. You will return to Tunbridge Wells West for approximately 13:30. There will be a break at Groombridge for you to see the steam locomotive and access the station. 

What has changed?

  1. To ensure we maintain Social Distancing and are COVID secure we will be using two 'Open' carriages which have an aisle down the centre. Passengers will be sat in bays of 2 or 4 in coach C with the bays alternating on the side of the carriage, the bay across the aisle from where you are sat will be empty. Passengers can be sat into groups of up to 4 in coach A, again the bay opposite you across the aisle will be empty. This is to maintain Social Distancing.
  2. On train toilets and a walk-up-bar service will not be available and you will be asked to board and disembark in a certain order. Toilets will be available at Tunbridge Wells West and Groombridge along with hand sanitisation points at both stations.
  3. On-board catering staff will be wearing additional PPE, they will be wearing masks when they need to approach your bay of seats and will wear gloves when handling anything that we need to put on your table (i.e. a drink). All staff have been briefed on the need to routinely wash their hands and they will have access to our handwashing facilities in bar car 'Kate'. 
  4. A limited drinks menu will be available, and glassware will not be provided, instead disposable cups/wine glasses will be available.
  5. Hot drinks will be available in disposable cups and not the usual crockery.
  6. The dessert is a slice of Victoria Sponge Cake. These are pre-packed.
  7. Napkins, pre-packed cutlery and a limited supply of tomato sauce, tartar sauce, salt, pepper and vinegar will be provided on your table.
  8. Eridge station and the line beyond Groombridge will be closed initially. High Rocks station is also closed.
  9. It is not possible to break your journey at Groombridge and return on a later train.

If you have any special dietary requirements, we must be made aware at the time of booking, menu options must be chosen during the booking process which does include a gluten free or a vegetarian option. It is impossible for us to alter the menu on the day.

We regret that due to the nature of the 1960s carriages we cannot accommodate wheelchair users on these dining experiences. The changes we have made due to COVID-19 are different and we are working in a new normal, unfortunately we cannot provide you with the original up close and personal experience at the moment. We are extremely limited on what we are able to do, and we appreciate your understanding and co-operation with this necessary change that are out of our control.

Booking information

Advance booking is essential to ride on our Fish & Chip trains.

On the day of your visit you MUST have your eTickets available to show either in a print out or on a mobile device, both will be checked visually by a member of staff before boarding the train.

Note that a £10 admin fee applies to all booking alterations.
